How to Switch Your Energy Supplier in Ohio
One quick way to potentially save money on expenses is ensuring you are getting a competitive rate with your monthly energy bill. Finding the right energy supplier can make all the difference in your budget.
However, it may seem daunting to switch energy suppliers. How can you know where to look or which company to choose? And, how much time will it take?
The good news is that switching energy suppliers isn’t challenging at all. In fact, it’s as easy as 1-2-3. Here are simple steps to help you get started.
1. Research Rates
Energy supply in Ohio has been deregulated. What does this mean for you? Energy deregulation is designed to lower prices for consumers by increasing competition. In short, natural gas and electric suppliers now compete for your business through various pricing and incentive plans.
While you may be contracted with your current utility company, you have more freedom to compare on an open market for a lower rate, a fixed rate, or even a monthly plan that makes financial sense for your home or business.
Quake Energy makes it wonderfully simple to see your potential rates: Just type in your zip code and select your utility company and type residential or commercial to view plans and rates available via Quake Energy.
2. Choose Your Plan
Once you understand the rates available in your area, the next step is to select the best plan for you. Are you looking for consistency from month to month so you can budget more effectively? If not, you may prefer to save money in the off-season summer months.
Perhaps you are looking for a better plan for your family’s cottage on Lake Erie, which you use mostly in the summer months, so a low variable rate is better for you, or maybe a fixed rate each month is better for your small business, which sees an uptick in energy use during the winter heating season.
Typically the rates separated into different plans, which are as follows:
- Monthly variable rate: With a low initial monthly rate, the rate per kilowatt per hour (kWh) or gas use per cubic feed (CcF or McF) can change from month to month. You can pay a competitive rate during peak months, and a typically a lower rate during the “off-season.”
- Fixed rate: This rate is set, so that the rate fee per kilowatt per hour (kWh), the volume of natural gas used per 100 cubic feet (CcF), or the volume of natural gas used per 1,000 cubic feet (McF) never changes. The kWh rate is the same in the bitter cold of February as it is in the friendly weather of May and June. A 12-month fixed rate means you have no surprises when bills tend to climb in the winter. While your energy usage may increase, your rate never will.
- Fixed rate, Renewable energy: Again, this rate is set for the entire year with an unchanging rate for the kWh, CcF or McF. But here, you have the added knowledge that you are using 100% renewable energy.
What’s one of the biggest benefits of a fixed rate plan with an energy supplier? Fewer surprises. Think of the frigid weather and lake-effect snowfall in northeast Ohio and the greater Cleveland area. With a locked-in rate, you never have to worry about how high rates may climb.
3. Enroll For a Better Rate
